Construction Safety Officer

Reports to: Site Superintendent

Position Scope

The Construction Safety Officer will work closely with the Site Superintendent to enforce health and safety policies, procedures, and WorkSafe OH&S regulations on the assigned construction site. They will be responsible for accurate compliance to OH&S legislation and promoting a culture of safety. The CSO is also responsible for assisting with compliance to the corporate OH&S Program and administering first aid services as necessary.

The CSO will work without supervision and can perform their duties outdoors in inclement weather. Communication is key in this role as the CSO must effectively lead and document toolbox meetings, monthly safety committee meetings, perform job hazard assessments, safety audits, and communicate safety requirements to all site personnel. Performing construction tasks such as building guardrails, basic carpentry, and general labour is also required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Respond to issues relating to health, safety, environment, emergency response, performance metrics and safety management systems for site operations.
  • Administer first aid services as necessary. 
  • Communicate safety requirements to all site personnel. 
  • Provide orientations to new workers/visitors to the site. 
  • Conduct effective site safety inspections and maintain records. 
  • Effectively lead and document toolbox meetings, monthly safety committee meetings, job hazard assessments, site safety audits, and shut-down unsafe work.
  • Lead site safety meetings and record meeting minutes.
  • Submit required daily, weekly, and monthly safety reports.
  • Conduct investigations of accidents and near miss incidents. 
  • Maintain and build a culture of health and safety on site.
  • Ability to work with safety data and produce reports. 
  • Enforce safety on site.  
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather. 
  • Perform construction tasks on site, basic carpentry work, building guardrails, general labour, etc.

Working Conditions

  • Frequently exposed to noise. 
  • Work schedule is typically Monday to Friday 7:30AM to 4:00PM. 
  • Overtime and weekend availability.

Other Requirements

  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination may be required to meet client site requirements.

Qualifications

  • CSO designation or equivalent experience and training.
  • 5+ years of safety experience in multi-family and/or single-family construction.
  • OFA Level 2 or 3 is required.
  • Fall arrest training and be familiar working at heights. 
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge and the ability to comply with all WorkSafe procedures and safety practices including on site work practices and guidelines.
  • Ability to travel frequently with projects. 
  • Must have valid driver’s license and own transportation
  • Must have basic knowledge in working with cranes and rigging. 
  • Familiar with all aspects of construction including excavation, backfill, concrete formwork & places, carpentry/framing, structural steel, mechanical, roofing, etc.   
  • Ability to work effectively with team members.
